Read the scion of ishwaku although unputdownable (probably owing to its small size) is a definite dissapointment after the shiva triology, where there was mystery and intrigue in the shiva series and a delicate analysis of the legends, this book just reiterates the old shiva triology concepts in an already well know story without much introspection and deep thought.. The book is absurd and uncomfortable in its own skin, The characters talk like they belong to modern India, they talk about Indian geography almost as if they have access to sattellite images. Words like pipsqueak, upstart & touche sound postively wierd coming from ram and sita.. You can almost anticipate that they will start speaking about changing thier relationship status on Facebook. The writer speaks about mithila, keykeya and kosala but does not give the present day names for reference.. However he uses the present day names for Egypt.. the geographic depiction is not awe inspiring there is no sense of wonder in the characters for the enormous and still uncharted land mass of the Indian sub continent. No description of the beautiful dandakaranya no elaboration of the narmada river and its scenic course and no reference given to present day names; all this creates a feeling of disorientation. Everything is stated in a matter of fact and bland tone. On a trivial note several mentions of the word blouse used for describing clothes of women really put me off.
Undeniably this book does dwell on feminine and masculine civilization but the debate and dialog seems watered down. It seems there is no meat in this book for a reader to chow down and feel satiety there is only thin watered down soup.... Well am not on a diet when it comes to books one needs substance!
